British Coast - Stage 054 - Birling Gap to Peacehaven
11 June 2025. The promise had been for clear skies, but arriving early enough for the sunrise, everything was all but obliterated by the heavy sea fog. The tide was out though, so it was possible to walk along the foot of the cliffs. The famous Seven Sisters, supposed to be one of the most spectacular sights of the Southern English coast - but instead, they loomed out of the mist. Still hauntingly majestic, though. Not quite daring to ford the Cuckmere by wading, at Cliffs End it was necessary to detour inland to the Exceat bridge, and back to Seaford Head. Climbing up above the Coastguard Cottages, the fog by now had lifted, offering something of the famous view of the Seven Sisters. But it was brief, because in the fog rolled again, and so Seaford Head was crossed with almost zero visibility. Reaching Seaford itself, the walk could have been cut short. But they day did appear to be lifting, and so I continued. Along the shingle banks to the detour up through Newhaven. Then on to Peacehaven, with its promenade along the base of yet more impressive white cliffs. While in the distance, Brighton begins to loom. 16 miles (Total walked 802 miles, 64 in Sussex)
