British Coast - Stage 055 - Peacehaven to Shoreham
8th July. More walking beneath the white cliffs, briefly broken by the small gaps where Saltdean and Rottingdean reach out to the sea. But then the urban stretch of Brighton and Hove. Modern marina, and Black Rock redevelopments. Slow renovation of the historic Madeira Terrace with its cast iron arches. Two piers, the Palace still intact, the Western nothing but a burnt skeleton left as a reminder of other times, while the city makes self-conscious claim to its trendy arty status. But then, after Hove Lagoon, the long industrialised peninsula of Shoreham, shielding its harbour, formed in the gap created by the River Adur at its maritime egress. 17 miles (Total walked 819 miles, 81 miles in Sussex).
